The Nintendo franchise, Animal Crossing, is a popular life simulation video game. The series released several main titles, including the original Animal Crossing on the N64/GameCube (2001), Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS/2005), Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii/2008), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS/2012), and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch/2020). Each game adds new features and gameplay elements that build upon the previous titles.

Fans hold Animal Crossing: New Leaf, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012, in high regard as a game in the series. There’s a reason it took a whopping eight years to follow it up with a new game. This game introduced the role of mayor, allowing players to make important decisions that shape their town’s development. New Leaf also introduced the ability for players to customize the exterior and interior of buildings.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons For A New Generation

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released for the Nintendo Switch in 2020, received critical acclaim for its expansive gameplay, charming characters, and colorful graphics. New Horizons essentially transcends everything that came before it. Its long development time paid off, as it has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, becoming one of Nintendo’s best-selling titles of all time (beating both Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate).

This game takes the series to a new level by allowing players to design and decorate their own island paradise from scratch. New Horizons introduces “Nook Miles,” a currency that players can earn by completing tasks and use to purchase items and unlock new features. The game also allows players to terraform their island, giving them even more control over its appearance.

Many fans now consider Animal Crossing: New Horizons the best game in the series due to its improved gameplay mechanics and the ability to play with friends online. However, choosing the best Animal Crossing game is a matter of personal preference.

Player’s Choice

Each game in the series has its own charm and offers a different experience. Some players may prefer the classic gameplay and nostalgic charm of the original Animal Crossing, while others may enjoy the added features and customization options of the newer titles.

Regardless of which game is considered the best, the Animal Crossing series consistently delivers enjoyable and immersive gameplay experiences that capture the hearts of players worldwide.
