Godzilla and King Kong did more than break each other’s faces in their highly anticipated showdown, they also broke box office records around the world.

Godzilla vs. Kong brought in a whopping $121.8 Million at the international box office over the weekend. $70.3 million of the came from China, while the rest poured in from at least 37 other markets.

Most films have suffered at the box office as of late, such as Pixar’s Onward and more recently Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, have suffered at the box amidst the pandemic. Raya barely managed to pull in $5.1 million this past weekend.

But can Godzilla vs. Kong keep up the momentum as it enters the US market this week? It’s hard to say. The film is also releasing to HBO Max soon, which could affect its box office sales. Plus, many US theaters are still either closed or operating at limited capacity.

Even if Godzilla vs. Kong doesn’t fare as well domestically in theaters as it did overseas, it’s still expected to earn a profit in the US and there is already speculation of a sequel underway.
