Nintendo announced a bunch of cool stuff coming to Super Mario Maker 2 in a free update that will launch on December 5th. Let’s break down the list of everything new you can expect from the game:
Enemies

Spike: The classic gluttonous Mario enemy that spits and throws spike balls at our hero will finally be available. Its spike balls can be used in creative ways, and it also utilizes snowballs for winter-themed levels.

Pokey: Another classic foe, Pokey, returns with a classic version of the cactus and a snowman version. In night mode, Pokey can float through the sky and even hone in on players when you give it wings.
Items / Power-Ups
Frozen Coin: Similar to an ice block, but it thaws out with Fire Flower power-up or other heat sources like the Angry Sun, leaving a coin behind. It could be useful in setting up traps, too.
P Block: Solid unbreakable blocks that temporarily appear when you step on a P Switch, ideal for puzzles.

Dash Block: This is a Super Mario 3D World feature that lets you run fast and jump long distances. You can also connect them to reach mach speed with a Koopa Troopa Car. Honestly, it gives off some Sonic the Hedgehog vibes, which is not bad at all.

Master Sword Power-Up: This might be the most exciting update. The Master Sword Power-Up allows you to play as Link from The Legend of Zelda. As Link, you can attack with the sword, guard with a shield, use a dash attack, and even a down thrust on enemies. Additionally, Link can use tools like the bow and arrow which can shoot in three different directions, and bombs which can be used in classic Zelda fashion.
This is a big deal, as one of the biggest complaints from series fans so far has been the lack of character power-ups and costumes that were available in the first Mario Maker. Here’s hoping Link is just the beginning. We might see even more Nintendo characters become playable in future updates.
Modes / Levels
Ninja Speedruns: Another exciting new feature will be Ninja Speedruns. This mode lets you race for the quickest time in courses created by Nintendo. New courses will be updated periodically, which will breathe new life into the 2D platforming title. Making new speedrun records will unlock costumes and stamps. Top players will also get gold stars circling around their Mii for a while.
Honestly, this is a welcome early Christmas gift from Nintendo. Check it out in the video below:
